That film was a choral vision of the Latin American tragedy of the dawn of the XXI century from the perspective of winners and losers, always condemned by the implacable marks of their own beliefs, conflicts and limitations.
Since that film, González Iñárritu has become famous from one more perspective. He knows how to shake hands with both revenge and counter-revenge. Obviously, we are not facing Park Chang-woo’s contributions to the vengeful theme after “Old boy”.
The Asian director explores and surprises. The Mexican has become a box office instrument. A well-made instrument, with the forgiveness of its critics.
González Iñárritu’s cinema today seeks popularity from the construction of heroes and anti-heroes incapable of forgiving, either due to errors or misprints.
Now Netflix is also reviving its award-winning film “The Revenant” where it shows off its film experience, especially when achieving a finished staging with an exemplary photograph (panoramic samples combined with surprising close-ups abound) and background music without hints of warmth.
As a complement, it introduces a soundtrack attentive to both ambient noises and sounds of time and space.
Along with its inexcusable commercial air, González Iñárritu’s film falls into orthodoxy. The script discards the version of the happy end in favor of the good guys and covers the certainty of the price of revenge: whoever seeks justice by his hand must be willing to do anything, even to lose.
It’s a good time Netflix provides to compare the yesterday and today of an Academy-acclaimed director.
