USA Today Travel just named Stillwater as one of America’s Most Picturesque Small Towns as their selection for the state of Minnesota.

“When it comes to the United States, each and every state has a unique look and feel,” USA Today Travel reporter, Susan B. Barnes said of the list. “Inside each individual state we can find large, thriving cities and quiet, serene towns. Here, we looked at picturesque small towns – one for each of the 50 states – as discovered through research and crowd-sourcing.”

What is it that makes Stillwater, Minnesota so picturesque?

Local artist and Stillwater Art Guild Gallery Founder, Randy Raduenz feels like it’s the natural beauty and rustic feel of the town, being an old logging town.

“I grew to really love the town, raised a family here and have been part of the community for 67 years,”Raduenz said. “To embrace Stillwater’s beauty, I’ve created a hometown collection series of prints and started an art gallery where people can buy directly from all the talented local artists in the St. Croix Valley. We’ve become a return destination where travelers bring back their friends to show them the town. Being picturesque is what inspires us artists, so I am not surprised by this designation for Stillwater.”

Christie L. Rosckes, the marketing director for the Stillwater/Oak Park Heights Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) said she hears numerous stories from travelers noting the natural beauty of the St. Croix River bluffs, the colorful historic architecture, the spice of small business ingenuity and a feeling of artistic inspiration.

Many of the symbols of the town – brick church steeples, main street shops, steamboat river cruises, trolley rides, used book stores, diners and outdoor festivals all evoke a sense of Americana not frequently found in one picturesque location.

The CVB is asking people to share why they think Stillwater is so picturesque by posting a picture or story on social media with the tag #PicturesqueStillwater.
