Bayport Officer Who Helped Save Suicidal Veteran Will Be Honored at Winter Gala Community Awards

The Greater Stillwater Chamber of Commerce recently announced the winners of their first annual Winter Gala Community Awards. The awards will be presented at the Chamber’s inaugural Winter Gala Community Award Celebration on Friday, Feb. 10 from 5:30 – 11 p.m. at the Water Street Inn. The Winter Gala Community Awards Celebration is open to the public – a $75 ticket includes a multi-course dinner, party favors, silent auction and raffle, live entertainment, awards ceremony and a tour of the Ice Castles. “We are very excited about this first annual inaugural event,” Chamber Director Robin Anthony said. Stillwater Artist William Ersland Wins 2 Awards in Wyoming and Colorado Art Shows

Well-known Minnesota artist William Ersland recently won first and a second place ribbons in two prestigious nationally juried shows in Wyoming and Colorado. At the March 7 opening of the Cheyenne Frontier Days Old West Museum’s 35th Annual Western Spirit Art Show and Sale,  Ersland’s long horizontal painting “Along the Trail” took a blue ribbon in the Acrylic Painting Division. The painting portrays members of a wagon trail including of a family with a team of oxen, a single black man, and a veteran confederate soldier on horseback followed by a burro and a dog. This is the 12th year Ersland has been accepted into this nationally juried show competition and the 3rd year that he’s won for his Western Paintings featuring cowboys, cowgirls and their horses.  The show runs through April 17. Ersland also exhibited three western paintings at the Sangre de Cristo Arts Center in Pueblo, Colorado and won a 2nd place ribbon for one of the paintings, “Harvest Moon.”  This painting features a couple on horseback perhaps riding to a barn dance with a huge harvest moon dominating the background.  The Show runs through mid-May. Stillwater Class of 1975 Raises over $850 for Valley Outreach

As most class reunions gather to reacquaint classmates, the Stillwater Class of 1975 put out a challenge to all future reunion committees to encourage their class to not only get together but to find a way to give back to the community. The Class of 1975 Reunion Committee partnered with Valley Outreach and area businesses to raffle items that would not only generate donations but raise awareness of how Valley Outreach provides food, clothing and emergency financial assistance to eligible St. Croix Valley residents. On the last beautiful Saturday of September, Stillwater classmates gathered at the Stillwater Country Club to golf, see old friends, eat fabulous food and hear Valley Outreach’s Executive Director Tracy Maki give a brief presentation regarding statistics on Stillwater school district families and seniors who use the Food Shelf and/or The Clothing Closet. Reunion committee members Eric Peterson, Ester Longseth, Mike Crea, Pat Zeuli, Becky Lyksett, Mitch Hobbins, Eldene Rosenwinkel, Dave Junker and Julie Wylie wrapped up the event presenting $851.00 to Valley Outreach. Brianna Johnson-Rabbett Graduates from University of Minnesota Medical School

Brianna Johnson-Rabbett, daughter of Becky Johnson & Kevin Rabbett, granddaughter of James (Bud) & Helen Johnson, recently graduated from the University of Minnesota Medical School with a M.D.

Brianna received multiple scholarships and honors throughout her time at the U of MN. She was also selected for induction into the Gold Humanism Honor society. She will continue her training with an internal medicine residency in Minneapolis beginning in June 2015. Her future plans include practice as an endocrinologist. Continue Reading →

Sauntry Mansion featured in Larry Millet’s New Book, ‘Minnesota’s Own: Preserving Our Grand Homes’

The William Sauntry Mansion in Stillwater is one of 22 Minnesota residences featured in Larry Millet’s most recent-selling book, “Minnesota’s Own: Preserving Our Grand Homes” (Minnesota Historical Society Press, $49.95). Designed and built between 1880 and 1883 for one of Stillwater’s renowned lumber barons, the William Sauntry Mansion at 626 4th Street North reflects the original owner’s eccentricities and penchant for opulence. The 7,000-square-foot, 28-room, three-story home features parquet floors, cherry and walnut fireplaces, and unique stained glass windows. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the house is a lasting reflection of the Sauntry lumber fortune and the range of architectural fashion during its construction and subsequent improvements. It incorporates Queen Anne with other notable style elements, including Eastlake millwork, a mansard-roofed tower common to Italianate villas and hints of Gothic style in the gable. Lakeview Hospital Recognized Nationally for Sustainability Program

(STILLWATER, June 10, 2014) – HealthPartners has achieved high sustainability honors nationally, receiving a total of seven Environmental Excellence Awards from Practice Greenhealth. Hudson, Lakeview, Regions and Westfields Hospitals met high benchmarks in recycling, mercury reduction, pollution prevention and energy conservation. Practice Greenhealth is the nation’s leading health care sustainability community that empowers its members to increase their efficiencies and environmental stewardship while improving patient safety and care. Lakeview Hospital was awarded the 2014 “Greenhealth Partner for Change” Award. This award recognizes health care facilities that continuously improve and expand upon their mercury elimination, waste reduction, recycling and source reduction programs. At a minimum, facilities applying for this Award must be recycling 15 percent of their total waste, have reduced regulated medical waste, are well along the way to mercury elimination, and have developed other successful pollution prevention programs in many different areas. Lakeview Hospital volunteers serve over 16,000 in the past year!

Lakeview Hospital honored its volunteers at a luncheon at Boutwells Landing on May 7, 2014. Over the past year, 203 volunteers contributed 16, 250 hours. Hospital volunteers work in 25 areas, including surgery reception, gift shop, information desks, pharmacy, Teddy Bear Clinic (educational program for kindergarteners), and nursing stations. Ten volunteers have served for 20 years or more: Darlene Berglund, Barb Dahlke, Ruth Guse, Betty Hudacek, Marie Olsen, Janet Roderick, Lorna Montagne, Kay Rosell, Lorna Schrade, and Norma Singer. 9th Annual Senior Health and Faith Day – Living with Purpose: Being at Your Best Physically, Emotionally and Spiritually

(Stillwater, MN) – On Tuesday, April 29, the St. Croix Valley Parish Nurses welcomed over 250 people to the 9th Annual Senior Health and Faith Day at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Stillwater. “The goal of our day was to simply encourage and equip our seniors to live well… physically, emotionally and spiritually,” said parish nurse, Shelly Rock. The program featured Stillwater Medical Group providers Dr. Tom Zurbriggen and Dr. Charles Bransford, who shared a talk on MAD (Making a Difference) and Loving It. Stillwater’s Mock Trial Team Honored with Minnesota Senate Resolution


The Stillwater Area High School Mock Trial team was honored by Sen. Karin Housley this week with an official Senate Resolution. Housley presented team members of the first-year Mock Trial team with Senate Resolution 180 after they qualified for the Minnesota State Tournament. The team won their first two rounds at the state competition. “These students have achieved something very impressive with their performance during Mock Trial competitions,” Housley said. “Their win demonstrates that with focus, hard work and a lot of will, you can achieve your goals. Pony Express Editor-In-Chief Wins Minnesota Journalist of the Year Award


Pony Express Editor-in-Chief, Paul Hudachek was recently named the Minnesota State Journalist of the Year (JOY) by the Journalism Education Association. To earn this honor, Hudachek, a senior at Stillwater Area High School, compiled an extensive portfolio of his work produced during his time on the newspaper staff, according to a post on the Stillwater Area School District’s website. Hudachek will now compete with some of the top Journalist of the Year winners around the country. The winner will be announced at the spring convention in San Diego in April. Lily Lake Principal Mark Drommerhausen to Receive Leadership Achievement Award


Lily Lake Elementary School Principal Mark Drommerhausen will receive the Leadership Achievement Award from the Minnesota Elementary School Principals Association. Drommerhausen, a Stillwater native, was selected from all of the elementary principals within the EastSuburban Division based on his efforts to improve education, his communities, and his profession, according to a news release from District 834. “Principals who receive this honor are recognized as role models and sources of inspiration to other principals and educators.” Drommerhausen, a graduate of the Stillwater Area High School, began his teaching career in 1998 and became an elementary principal in 2006.
