Stillwater’s Summer Festival Will Once Again Be Called … Lumberjack Days

Lumberjack Days will return to downtown Stillwater next summer. The Locals brought a summer festival back to Stillwater two summers ago. The Locals estimate that 28,000 people attended over the course of the three days of Stillwater Log Jam 2015. That’s nearly double last year’s attendance. The amphitheater and layout of the park worked great this year — there’s been a lot of positive feedback, Brad Glynn, of The Locals, told the Stillwater City Council last week. The park itself, the layout, and all of the time spent planning the event really paid off. Although Stillwater Log Jam’s attendance nearly doubled that of the inaugural event, Glynn said this year’s festival showed there is still room to grow. Continue Reading →

Letter to the Editor: Thank You, ‘Locals,’ for a Successful Log Jam

Letter to the Editor-

“Congratulations to the “Locals” for creating, shepherding and tirelessly promoting a very successful initial Log Jam event. The loss of Lumberjack Days created a prominent community identity gap for Stillwater. Although Summer Tuesdays has filled an element of that void it is clear that Log Jam will grow to be the crown jewel of summer in Stillwater. Stillwater residents are the very fortunate beneficiaries of countless hours of volunteer time from the Locals board members. These organizers have given countless hours to this event; hours they were not with their families, hours they were not working at their own businesses, countless nights of lost sleep and a never-ending push to promote the event. Catch Vintage Base Ball Exhibitions July 19 During Stillwater Log Jam

From the Washington County Historical Society:

Six vintage base ball clubs will gather at the Old Athletic Field on Saturday, July 19 to exhibit the game as it was meant to be played during Stillwater Log Jam. Vintage base ball uses the rules set by Henry Chadwick in 1860. Some of the more curious rules of the game that have since left the rule book include:

there are no balls or strikes called;

a batter is out if the ball is caught on the fly or first bounce;

fielders do not use gloves; and

the pitcher pitches the ball underhanded to where the batter would like it. If you’re not familiar, the Old Athletic Field is at the corner of Sixth Avenue and Orleans Street. The matches are free to the public, just bring a lawn chair and a few friends and watch base ball as it was meant to be played. Continue Reading →
