St. Croix River Crossing: Highway 95 Switches to Single Lane as Construction Ramps Up

Highway 95 switched to single-lane traffic in each direction at the Highway 36 today, March 21. The lane closures are necessary for crews to resume transporting segments across the road for Minnesota approach bridge deck construction, according to a MnDOT news release. MnDOT Warns of Dangerous Ice Conditions on the St. Croix River During Winter Construction of River Crossing

A tug boat is breaking ice in the St. Croix River to allow construction crews to continue work on the new St. Croix River Crossing during the winter months. Crews are currently breaking ice within and downstream of the bridge construction zone, according to a MnDOT news release. Crews are breaking ice as far south as the overhead power lines coming from the Xcel Energy Allen S. King Power Plant near Bayport. Continue Reading →

Time Lapse Video of St. Croix River Crossing Shows 2 Years of Construction Progress

The Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) has released a time lapse video showing construction of the St. Croix River Crossing from December 2013 to November 2015. The river deck construction of the St. Croix River Crossing  has shut down for the winter as the temperatures are too cold for crews to place additional segments, according to MnDOT. The epoxy, a strong adhesive used to join segments, cannot be applied when the temperature is below 28 degrees. St. Croix River Crossing Completion Date Delayed

As it turns out, we’ll have to wait longer than fall 2016 to drive over the new St. Croix River Crossing. The Minnesota and Wisconsin Departments of Transportation on Friday announced that the completion date for the bridge portion of the St. Croix River Crossing project will be delayed. “This is a very complex engineering project,” MnDOT Commissioner Charlie Zelle said in a prepared statement.  “This is only the second major bridge of its type built in the U.S. and the methods of construction are taking longer than anticipated.”

The project had planned to open the bridge to traffic in fall 2016. Continue Reading →

Oren Avenue, Portion of North Frontage Road will Close this Week for Realignment Work

A portion of the North Frontage Road will close this week as part of the realignment of the roadway at Highway 36 and Osgood Avenue in Oak Park Heights. The installation of storm sewer pipes will mean a closure of Oren Avenue and the North Frontage Road this week. The closure is expected to begin Wednesday, Sept. 2. When the storm sewer pipes installation is complete, the North Frontage road will re-open to traffic. Crews hope the North Frontage Road will re-open by Friday, Sept. Continue Reading →

Construction on Minnesota Loop Trail Underway in Stillwater

Construction of the Minnesota portion of the 4.7 mile St. Croix River Crossing Loop Trail is underway. Loop Trail construction will take place in phases from now until 2017. This year’s construction will focus on the stretch of trail from north of Sunnyside Marina to north of Nelson Street in downtown Stillwater. This week, the contractor is working to secure a historic wall along the future trail and removing some trees and other vegetation. Continue Reading →

St. Croix River Crossing: Highway 95 Traffic Switch Begins

The road work for the Minnesota approach to the St. Croix River Crossing is nearing the finish line. On Monday night, MnDOT switched the traffic flow along Highway 95 near the Hwy 36/95 interchange to the northbound lanes as crews finish hanging the last few segments at Pier 1.//

First St. Croix River Crossing Deck Segments to Arrive Friday

The first pair of concrete segments that will eventually form the deck of the St. Croix River Crossing will arrive at the construction site on Friday. The 170-ton concrete segments, along with a lifter crane that will be used to place them on top of Pier 8, will travel 33 miles by barge from Grey Cloud Island to the bridge construction site on Friday, according to MnDOT. Allegation of Workplace Racism Brought Against Contractor for St. Croix River Crossing

While the Minnesota Department of Transportation continues to communicate progress on the St. Croix River Crossing, the project’s largest contractor is coming under fire. In November 2013, Lunda-Ames Joint Venture was awarded a $332 million contract to lead construction of the St. Croix Crossing bridge superstructure, along with some roadwork associated with the project. This week, Lunda-Ames has been in the news for a “contract dispute” that led to ironworkers walking off the job for a couple of days, and most recently, an allegation of workplace racism. St. Croix River Crossing: Highway 95 Lane Closures Begin April 1

Anyone using Highway 95 between downtown Stillwater and Highway 36 will want to note that the roadway will be down to a single lane beginning Wednesday, April 1 as crews prepare the area to move segments across the road for St. Croix River Crossing bridge deck construction. Highway 95 from downtown Stillwater to Highway 36 will be down to a single lane through fall 2015, weather permitting. The project’s on-site casting yard — located near the Highway 36/95 interchange —  is where crews are fabricating more than 330 pre-cast concrete segments that will make up the driving surface of the approach ramps on Minnesota land. 2015 St. Croix River Crossing Construction Schedule is the Topic of 2 Public Meetings

The Minnesota Department of Transportation is holding two public meetings on Tuesday, March 24 previewing this year’s construction schedule for the St. Croix River Crossing Project. St. Croix River Crossing Project staff will be talk about the 2015 St. Croix Crossing Minnesota approach construction schedule, which includes finishing business driveways and local road connections, placing a final layer of asphalt on most road surfaces within the construction zone, and completing finishing touches, such as striping. WisDOT Awards H. James & Sons Approach Work Contract for St. Croix River Crossing

The Wiscinsin Department of Transportation has awarded Fennimore, Wisc.-based low bidder H. James & Sons, Inc. the contract to construct the second phase of the state’s approach to the new St. Croix Crossing. H. James and Sons, Inc. was also the lead contractor for 2014 Wisconsin highway work. The construction will begin in spring 2015, and will include:

Grading from just north of County E to WIS 64

Grading, paving and incidentals on the relocated County E

Constructing the interchange at County E and the roundabouts at the new WIS 35/County E intersection and at the interchange location

Pile driving on the Wisconsin bluff for the east bridge abutment is anticipated to be completed in early-January. Crews will construct the abutment footing, according to WisDOT. Continue Reading →

Video: MnDOT Begins Breaking Ice Along St. Croix River

The Minnesota Department of Transportation is warning of dangerous ice conditions, as a tug boat has begun the process of continuously breaking ice on the St. Croix River within the construction zone of the St. Croix Crossing. Early-Onset of Winter Impacts St. Croix River Crossing Project

The early-onset of winter is impacting work on the St. Croix River Crossing Project. “Minnesota road work is wrapping up in November due to prolonged below-freezing temperatures,” a MnDOT news release reads. “So, some activities that we were on track to complete in 2014 will need to be pushed until spring/early summer 2015. Chiglo, who led the rebuilding effort of the I-35W bridge collapse in 2007 before being named the project manager for the St. Croix River Crossing, is leaving his post as MnDOT’s director of engineering services for a job in the private sector. A new phase of St. Croix River Crossing road construction along Highway 36 is underway. Greeley Street reopened last weekend, but that means closures for the North Frontage Road and Oakgreen Avenue to complete the final construction phase for the Greeley-Oakgreen intersection at Highway 36. North Frontage Road Realignment Plan at Osgood Moves Forward with Land Acquisition

The North Frontage Road realignment project is moving forward. The Washington County Board of Commissioners on Sept. 9 approved the acquisition of land to realign the North Frontage road at Highway 36 and Osgood Avenue in Oak Park Heights. The roadway’s current intersection with Osgood Avenue will be closed, and the intersection will be moved north to align with the northern entrance with the Walgreens parking lot. The roadway will travel west through the Fury Motors land, and then turn south at Oren Avenue North (just east of Joseph’s), and reconnect with the current North Frontage Road. Continue Reading →

St. Croix River Crossing Update: Closures Continue as School Buses Hit the Road

With school back in session, please keep an eye out for kids crossing streets and be ready to stop for buses. You’ll also want to make note of these traffic impacts in the Stillwater area:

Crews will be working on the South Frontage Road between Osgood and Olene avenues for about a month before moving further west. Traffic is currently flowing along a temporary frontage road giving access to the South Frontage Road businesses and local roads by using the temporary extended driveways from the temporary frontage road. Osgood Open at Highway 36, Lane Closures as Hilton Trail Project Nears Completion

Osgood Avenue reopened at Highway 36 last weekend, and now crews will begin repaving the eastbound lanes of Highway 36 in preparation for the reconstruction of the South Frontage Road. The eastbound lanes of Highway 36 will act as a “temporary frontage road” to access homes and businesses during the reconstruction of the South Frontage Road west of Oakgreen to Osgood Avenue. This work will continue through late-October. St. Croix Crossing Update: A Look at the New Greeley/Oakgreen Intersection, Osgood Closure Planned, Aerial Shots & More

MnDOT recently released a map showing the change of location of the Greeley/Oakgreen intersection at Highway 36. “The new alignment moves the frontage roads away from Highway 36, adds two additional traffic signals and creates a square Highway 36 intersection,” according to this St. Croix Crossing Facebook post. “All of this will improve safety in this location.”
