Photos: Stillwater at the State Hockey Tournament

It’s not very often that an entire high school hockey game is played without a single penalty assessed, but that happened Friday afternoon when the Stillwater Ponies took on Duluth East. Duluth East junior Brian Bunten scored both of the Greyhounds goals –one in the second period, and the game-winner 3 minutes and 7 seconds into overtime. Stillwater’s goal came in the first period by junior Tyler Benson. Sophomore goalie Josh Benson had 36 saves in the game. In Just a Few Hours, Stillwater Sells Out of Ticket Allotment for State Hockey Tournament

 

Update: Stillwater Area High School has sold out of its allotment of tickets for the Ponies first-ever trip to the Minnesota State High School Hockey Tournament. Tickets may be available for purchase at the Xcel Energy Center one hour before each session starts. Be prepared to arrive early and stand in line for these tickets. A single session ticket is good for two games, and costs $17 for adults and $11 for students for Xcel sessions.  The prices are $12 and $8 for Mariucci sessions (consolation rounds). Stillwater’s Pep Band is Out of Town for State Hockey Tournament

 

UPDATE: Stillwater boys hockey team is heading to the Minnesota State Tournament this week—but one thing is missing: the Pep Band. Here’s the deal: The pep band is out of state this week, Stillwater Area School District spokesperson Carissa Keister said, and will not be able to play on Thursday when the Ponies take on Edina in Stillwater’s first-ever trip to the State Tournament. “The Minnesota State High School League has informed us that only our school band, made up of high school students, can perform at the state hockey tournament,” Keister said . “They will not allow a junior high band or a community band to perform. “We’ve been back and forth with them numerous times, but we’ve finally had to concede. 2014 Football Schedule: Familiar Foes Missing, Cretin-Derham Hall Comes to Town for Homecoming

 

The Ponies 2014 football schedule is out and there are a couple of familiar opponents missing, as well as an interesting Homecoming matchup. The Ponies will open the season on the road at Roseville, and close the season hosting Mounds View. But missing from this year’s schedule is Hastings, who is no longer in the Suburban East Conference, and East Ridge, who was dropped from Stillwater’s schedule to accommodate the nine teams remaining in the SEC. Jessie Diggins Fan Cheer Former Pony Star on During Olympic Ski Race

Chilkoot Cafe was bustling before dawn on Saturday morning with crew of Jessie Diggins fans anxious to watch the former Ponies star anchor the US Ski Team’s 4x5K relay in the 2014 Sochi Olympic Games. Diggins and her USA teammates left it all on the course Saturday, unfortunately they were not able to keep pace and finished ninth at the women’s 4x5k relay. “This morning there was a ton of pressure and expectations with everyone saying, ‘This is it! This is your shot to win a medal.’ Realistically there were six or seven teams that had a shot to win that gold medal today, and as you saw, things didn’t shake down exactly how you might have expected them to every other World Cup weekend,” Diggins said. “So I just focused on the things I could control: when I was going to eat breakfast, how I was going to test my skis, when I was going to get on course to warm up. Jessie Diggins: Views from Sochi’s Opening Ceremony to USA’s Best Distance Cross Country Finish

Stillwater Area High School grad Jessie Diggins placed 8th in her first event of the 2014 Sochi Olympics. She is expected to compete in three more events during the games. The oldest cross country ski race in the state took place last weekend at William O’Brien State Park in Marine on St. Croix. The 43rd annual Marine O’Brien Cross Country Ski Race featured a wood ski tour, adult classical and skate races, and wrapped up the event with a kids races. All proceeds from the race support the St. Croix Valley Ski Club, which teaches kids from ages 3-13 how to cross country ski every Sunday in January February at William O’Brien. Continue Reading →

Pittsburgh Steelers Rookie Defensive End Brian Arnfelt Returns to Stillwater Area High School

Pittsburgh Steelers defensive end Brian Arnfelt paid a visit to his high school alma mater this week. The former Ponies football standout was home in Minnesota visiting family and friends and decided to stop by Stillwater Area High School and talk with our players. The following information was provided to Stillwater Current by the Ponies Touchdown Club:

Arnfelt, who was an All-State defensive lineman for the Ponies in 2007, said playing football hasn’t come easy for him. “I didn’t start every game on the sophomore team and I wasn’t able to play a full football game my junior year. Stillwater Grad Jessie Diggins Nominated to Lead US Cross Country Ski Team in 2014 Sochi Olympics

From three-time Minnesota Nordic State Champion as a Stillwater Pony to a World Champion in just a few years, Jessie Diggins has had an incredible rise to the top. Now she’ll ski in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. The U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association this week nominated Diggins, an Afton native, to lead the United States cross country team during the 2014 Sochi Olympic Games. “World Champions Kikkan Randall and Jessie Diggins will lead the team that includes seven athletes with Olympic experience,” the announcement reads. Lake Elmo Park Reserve to Host Cross Country Ski Festival this Weekend

 

The 11th Annual Cross Country Ski Festival is happening this weekend at Lake Elmo Park Reserve. The cross country ski festival is set for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., on Saturday, Jan. 25. Here’s more information via Washington County:

The Lake Elmo Lions Annual Ice Fishing Contest is right around the corner.
