Stillwater Area High School Mountain Bike Team Info Meeting and Bike Swap


The Stillwater Area High School Mountain Bike Team, MN State Division 1 Runner-Up in 2016, will be holding an informational meeting and bike swap on May 21 at 3 p.m. at Valley View Park’s Upper Parking Lot. Entrance is on the east side of Osgood, 1 mile south of Hwy 36 and just north of the Oak Park Heights Prision. If you have bikes, clothing or gear you have outgrown, bring it to the swap! Hill Murray Tops Stillwater 6-3 in Section Finals, Advances to State Hockey Tournament

The Hill-Murray Pioneers topped the Stillwater Ponies 6-3 Friday night’s Section Finals to advance to the the Minnesota State High School Hockey Tournament. Hill-Murray scored three goals in the third period (2 with an open net) to claim the Section 4AA title, and clinch a berth to the state tournament. Stillwater’s Jackson Cates Honored with Herb Brooks Award

Jackson Cates was honored with the Class AA Herb Brooks award Saturday night at the Minnesota State High School Hockey Tournament. The Herb Brooks award is given to the most qualified hockey player in the state tournament who strongly represents the values, characteristics, and traits that defined hockey legend Herb Brooks. Congrats to #10 Jackson Cates for receiving the Herb Brooks Award!

The head coach of each team qualifying for both state hockey tournament nominates a player for the Herb Brooks Award. Characteristics and values nominees for the award include:

Stillwater’s Girls Swimming and Diving Coach Brian Luke Breaks Father’s State Record with 125th Consecutive Win

The Stillwater girls swim and dive team hasn’t lost a dual meet in more than a decade. Last week, Stillwater’s Coach Brian Luke set the state record when the Ponies captured their 125th consecutive win — dating back to 2003 — defeating East Ridge. The previous record was held by Luke’s 89-year-old father, Elmer, who coached at Hopkins from the late 1970s to early 1990s. Stillwater Football Celebrates 1975, 1995 Ponies State Championship Teams

Stillwater Ponies football fans will be celebrating the anniversaries of the 1975 and 1995 State Championship teams this year. Stillwater will celebrate the 20th and 40th anniversaries of the state championships on Saturday, Aug. 22 at Pony Stadium. The teams of 1975 and 1995 will be recognized during the Ponies home opener against Eagan. Stillwater Defeats White Bear Lake in Double Overtime, Advances to Section Finals Against Hill Murray

The Stillwater boys hockey team will take on Hill Murray Friday night at Aldrich Arena for a trip to the Minnesota State Hockey tournament. The puck drops in the section finals at 7 p.m.

The Ponies advanced to the section finals Wednesday night with an exciting 3-2 double overtime victory over White Bear Lake. Ponies defeat White Bear Lake 3-2 in double overtime. What a game.

Jessie Diggins Helps Make US Skiing History at World Championships

Minnesota cross-country skiers Jessie Diggins and Caitlin Gregg made United States skiing history this morning by finishing second and third respectively in the 10 kilometer freestyle event at the world Nordic skiing competition in Falun, Sweden. Diggins, a Stillwater Area High School graduate from Afton, finished second. Gregg finished third, marking the first time two Americans placed in the top three at an international competition, according to NBC Sports. The race was among the least predictable events held this season on the World Cup circuit, according to a report on the US Ski Team’s website. Snow was forecast for start time but at the actual start, there were just tiny little flakes, which created little impact on the event. Continue Reading →

All the Lumberjacks Need is Love Heat! Local Special Olympics Team Bears the Cold Winter Water in the Annual Polar PlungeOn Valentine’s Day

WHAT: The SCV Lumberjacks are once again braving the frigid Minnesota waters for their largest fundraising event of the year, the Polar Plunge. This year’s event site, Woodbury, is brand new, and the air temperature on Saturday will only be seven degrees (can you say brrrr?) Interviews will be available with plungers, including athletes and coaches, so come see the team freezing for a reason! The SVC Lumberjacks will be celebrating at Buffalo Wild Wings (5991 Norwich Ave. N. Boys Hockey: Stillwater Tops Orono 2-1 (Photos)

Coming off of the first trip to the Minnesota State Hockey Tournament in school history, the Stillwater boys hockey team won their season opener 2-1 over Orono. Stillwater goaltender Josh Benson had 21 saves. Devon Cates scored the Ponies first goal with assists from Jackson Cates and Jack Mapstone. Stillwater’s Kenzie Hanzlik Sets Soccer Records at St. Cloud State

Kenzie Hanzlik, a resident of Stillwater, Minn. and graduate of Stillwater H.S., finished her collegiate soccer career at St. Cloud State University as the owner of several new career goalkeeping records for the Huskies. A standout in the nets for the Huskies from 2010 to 2014, Hanzlik leaves the campus as the Huskies’ record holder for most career victories with 27 and most career shutouts with 17. Both of the old records were previously held by Elizabeth Kelly, who tallied 26 wins and 16 shutouts from 2006-09. Continue Reading →

Running Back Zach Knox Breaks Stillwater’s All-Time Rushing Record


Zach Knox is now the Ponies all-time leading rusher. The senior running back made history in Stillwater’s section playoff loss to Totino-Grace on Friday, October 31, 2014. Knox gained 74 yards on 16 carries, for a total of 3,077 career rushing yards. He surpassed the previous record holder all-stater Aaron Runk, who had 3,028 career rushing yards from 1993 – 1995. Knox broke the all-time rushing record despite being forced to sit out two games this season because of a concussions. Continue Reading →

Photos: Totino-Grace Tops Stillwater in Football Section Finals

No. 2 seeded Totino-Grace (9-1) will return to the state tournament after beating Stillwater 29-13 in the crossover matchup in 6A playoff action. Stillwater running back Zach Knox did set a new Ponies rushing record in the battle rushing for 75 yards on 16 carries. Overall, the Ponies were held to 168 total yards. Zach Knox Zeros in on Stillwater’s All-Time Rushing Record


Running back Zach Knox is chasing Stillwater’s all-time rushing record. The senior needs just 24 yards to surpass all-stater Aaron Runk’s record of 3,028 career yards set from 1993 to 1995. Knox enters Friday’s game against Totino-Grace with 3,005 yards. Knox told the Stillwater Gazette, he’s more focused on winning the game than setting the record. “I’m going to love to have it, but playoffs is so many steps ahead of that for the team,” Knox told the Gazette. “I feel like I’ve worked hard for that, but clearly the playoffs mean more to me right now and playing as many games as I can with my teammates for our last year — for a lot of us, our last year.”

Knox was forced to sit out two games this season because of a concussions. Had he played in those games, he surely would have broken the record by now. Earlier this season, Knox broke Runk’s all-time carries record of 500 and is currently at 554. Continue Reading →

Football: Stillwater Takes On Totino-Grace for Trip to State Tournament

The Stillwater football team looked impressive last week in the first round of the section 4AAAAAA playoffs, pounding Roseville 53-20 at Pony Stadium. Mounds View Clinched the Suburban East Conference title—and likely the top seed in the playoffs— Wednesday night beating Stillwater 34-20 at Pony Stadium. The Stillwater Ponies look to upset SEC rival Mounds View Wednesday night in what will be the last chance to be crowned conference champions. Football: Stillwater Plays Mounds View Wednesday for Share of SEC Title (Photos)

Stillwater will play Mounds View for a share of the SEC title Wednesday night at Pony Stadium. The Ponies (6-1) bounced back after their only loss of the season, and pounded Woodbury 47-20 Friday night at Royal Stadium. Stillwater running back Marques Williams ran for 85 yards and 3 touchdowns filling in for the injured Zach Knox. Quarterback DJ Skie threw for 4 touchdowns against the Royals (1-6) — three of them to wide receiver Brooks Carroll and one to tight end Matt Anderson. Photos: Cretin-Derham Hall Hands Stillwater First Loss of Season

Cretin-Derham Hall handed the Ponies their first loss of the season on a windy, wet and cold Friday night at Pony Stadium. The Raiders came into Pony Stadium on Homecoming night with a chip on their shoulder–after losing to Stillwater last year during Cretin-Derham Hall’s Homecoming–and beat the Ponies 32-14. Cretin-Derham Hall (4-2) got off to a 19-0 first quarter lead and never looked back. Senior Brooks Carroll scored both touchdowns for the Ponies. The Ponies spoiled White Bear Lake’s Homecoming last week with a 35-7 win in the state’s oldest rivalry. Stillwater improved to 5-0 on the season, and moved up to No. 6 in the AP’s football rankings. The Ponies are keeping pace with Mounds View (5-0) and East Ridge (5-0) at the top of the Suburban East Conference.

Ponies Pound Park 56-7, Improve to 4-0

The Ponies pounded Park Friday night to improve to 4-0 on the season. Stillwater’s offense exploded for 484 total yards. Zach Knox scored 4 touchdowns and rushed for 181 yards. Brooks Carroll rushed for 2 TDs (29 and 50 yards), while Nick Wanovich broke free on an 81-yard touchdown run. Once again, the Ponies defense was stingy, allowing Park just -2 rushing yards. Football Friday: Stillwater Routes St. Paul Central 56-15 in Home Opener

Stillwater got things rolling right out of the gate Friday night and never looked back beating St. Paul Central 56-15 in the Ponies home opener. The Ponies improved to 2-0 on the season, and head to Forest Lake (0-2) next week. East Ridge and Mounds View each improved to 2-0 on the season and in the SEC Friday night. Update: Ponies Shutout Roseville 20-0 in Season Opener

Stillwater’s defense shutout Roseville 20-0 Thursday night in the Ponies season opener. The Ponies offense converted on three fourth downs, two of which ended in touchdowns. DJ Skie threw two touchdown passes in his first game at quarterback –  one to wide receiver Matt Anderson, and the other to running back Zach Knox. Knox also rushed for more than 150 yards and a touchdown. Ponies 7-on-7 Football Team Wins Regionals, Heads to National Tournament

Stillwater’s 7-on-7 football team won the Regional NFL High School Player Development (HSPD) Tournament hosted by the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, June 22, 2014. Stillwater came back from 17 points down in the second half to beat last year’s winners, Lakeville South, in the championship game 45-38 at Winter Park. To get to the championship game, the Ponies defeated Prior Lake 35-24, former champion Becker 42-36 in double overtime, and Rochester HSPD champion Byron 45-28. The tournament featured 16 teams from around the state, including former champion Minnetonka. Twelve Stillwater players will travel all-expenses paid to Indianapolis, Indiana on July 12-15 for the NFL HSPD 7-on-7 National Tournament Championships. Our players will represent the Minnesota Vikings as they compete against 31 teams from NFL markets across the country. Longtime Ponies Defensive Line Coach Resigns



The Stillwater Ponies football program has some big shoes to fill with the resignation of varsity defensive line coach Bryan Keister. The owner of Keister and Keister Insurance Agency in Stillwater, Keister’s role has changed since his father Steve, the agency’s co-owner, began to ease into retirement and Keister himself became a father. “My agency requires more of me now than it did prior,” Keister said. “Moreover, I want to squeeze every moment of family time possible with my daughter.”

Keister, a 1995 graduate of Stillwater Area High School, was a two-year starter for the Ponies in 1993-1994. An All Conference defensive tackle as a senior, Keister went on to play four years at the University of St. Thomas where he would attain All MIAC honors as a senior as well. As Keister learned the family business, he joined the varsity staff in 2003, a post he would hold for 11 years. The experience has had an indelible impact on him. Continue Reading →

Ponies Football: 7-9 Grade Programs Get an Overhaul, Major Coaching Changes Announced


So far, 2014 has been a year of transformation for the Stillwater Ponies storied football program. The 9th grade football program is getting an overhaul, the 7th and 8th grade programs will no longer be offered at the junior high schools and longtime Ponies Defensive Coordinator Mark Elmer is stepping down. Starting this year, 7th and 8th grade football will no longer be offered at Oak-Land or Stillwater junior high schools. Instead, the St. Croix Valley Athletic Association is offering football for 3rd through 8th grade throughout the valley. Continue Reading →
