Stillwater area high school athletes are improving their performance with a new focus on nutrition

More than 800 athletes are learning how to fuel their bodies to maximize their performance with the help of PowerUp, in partnership with Lakeview Hospital, Stillwater Medical Group, Ponies Touchdown Club and Stillwater Area High School. Lakeview Hospital dietitian Susan Crowell, MS, RD, CDE brings her expertise in sports nutrition to coaches and teams at Stillwater High School to help educate and motivate athletes to eat better and PowerUp. Susan utilizes the PowerUp Playbook as a resource guide for students. The Playbook is a practical nutrition guide based on sports nutrition research to help athletes achieve top performance by fueling their bodies with the right foods and hydration. “Developing the PowerUp Sports Nutrition Playbook was important to educate students, parents and coaches on the proper nutrition and hydration for athletes on and off the field,” said Susan Crowell. FREE Kid’s Bike Safety Rodeo this weekend!

Come play for the afternoon at this family-friendly open gym and Bike Safety Rodeo. This is not your typical rodeo. Kids and parents can all cycle their way through this safety course hosted by the Bicycle Alliance of MN. It’s a fun way for kids to learn about bike safety and practice on a cool course. On Wednesday, May 13th at 3:00 p.m., Chomp, the mascot for the Power Up initiative in Stillwater, will visit New Horizon Academy in honor of Power Up 4 Kids week. “New Horizon Academy has a very strong focus on health and nutrition and we are looking forward to celebrating Power Up 4 Kids week with the rest of the Stillwater community,” said Sarah Brahy, Director of New Horizon Academy Stillwater. PowerUp your weekend with the Stillwater Stairs!


Sunday, September 7, 2014 1 p.m. – Starting and ending at Pioneer ParkThe Stairs of Stillwater 5K walk brings participants through beautiful downtown Stillwater while providing a challenging walking course of hills and staircases that wind to and from downtown, starting and finishing in Pioneer Park. It is not a race but a great stair climbing challenge with many rewards including beautiful vistas of the St. Croix River valley. This walk is intended for participants ages 12+ who are physically able to handle the challenging 5K terrain. There will also be a 1 mile course beginning at Pioneer Park winding through gorgeous Lowell Park for those desiring a less rigorous course as well as a fun activities by PowerUp for smaller children held within Pioneer Park. What are the ingredients of a successful school carnival?


At Lake Elmo Elementary School the answer is a tropical theme, fun games, plus great foods, without any candy, sweet drinks, or other sweets. The Carnival Committee made a big change this year as they made a change to 100% healthy foods and prizes, in partnership with PowerUp, an initiative of Lakeview Health. The results exceeded everyone’s expectations for fun, and school fundraising, serving as an inspiration to other schools to make healthy changes as well. The volunteers of the carnival committee were the first in the St. Croix Valley to change a school carnival to 100% healthy options, trading in some old traditions for better ones. PowerUp went to Preschool!

PowerUp Goes to Preschool! On Saturday, April 5th, 2014 Stillwater’s Early Childhood Family Center partnered with PowerUp to put on a Family Fun Fair, free of charge and open to all preschoolers and their families! “The preschool family fun fair was great mix of fun activities in the gym, fun games, and learning about how to be healthy. My girls had so much fun- their favorite part was spinning the wheel for a chance to win a healthy snack!” – Bre decorsey, Mom of two. Gopher Athletes ‘PowerUp’ at Stillwater Junior High Open Gym


A handful of Gopher athletes crashed open gym at Stillwater Junior High School Feb. 7 for PowerUp’s latest event in partnership with Stillwater schools. Elle Arvesen, Julia Courter, Jennifer Larrick and Luke Mcavoy shot hoops, played floor hockey, tossed  around the football with about 100 kids from the community. The athletes signed Gopher posters, hung out, and shared how they PowerUp.  

Chomp also made a guest appearance, challenging Gopher soccer player, Jennifer Larrick, to a push-up competition. After completing 25 push-ups, Jennifer decided to let Chomp win. Continue Reading →

PowerUp School Challenge is Back


The PowerUp School Challenge is back. The PowerUp School Challenge is a four-week program that inspires kids to PowerUp every day with five servings of fruits, veggies and fun physical activity. The Challenge kicks off with a high-energy school assembly with music, dancing and games led by Radio Disney. Hundreds of kids get dancing and cheering about colorful fruits and veggies, and their favorite physical activities.
