Lakeview Hospital is Designated as a Stroke Ready Hospital by the Minnesota Department of Health

Nearly one in three Minnesota stroke victims first receives care at a small, rural hospital. In addition, more than one-third of Minnesotans live more than 60 minutes away from a Primary Stroke Center. These facts highlight the importance of local hospitals becoming designated as stroke-ready facilities. “When it comes to stroke, time lost is brain lost,” said MDH Commissioner of Health, Dr. Ed Ehlinger. “That is why it is so crucial that all Minnesota hospitals are ready to deliver high-quality stroke care close to home.”

Reading Program Expands to Stillwater Medical Group Mahtomedi Clinic

HealthPartners is expanding a national program in its primary care clinics to help young children develop the skills to learn to read by age five. The Reach Out and Read program is currently in or is being implemented in 2015 at nearly 50 clinics at HealthPartners, Park Nicollet and Stillwater Medical Group including the Mahtomedi Clinic. The program was developed based on research that shows that children who learn to read at grade level by third grade are more likely to graduate from high school and more likely to have better health as adults. “Doctors, nurses and other caregivers can greatly influence patient choices and this program is an opportunity for caregivers to help parents build language skills and brain development in their children which can last a lifetime,” said Steve Scallon, MD, pediatrician and Regional Medical Director for Stillwater Medical Group. According to Reach Out and Read, parents who participate in the program are four times more likely to read aloud to their children compared to parents who do not.  On vocabulary tests, pre-school children in Reach Out and Read programs score three to six months ahead of children who did not participate. HealthPartners Offers Tips to Help Prevent the Flu

Information from HealthPartners:

With this year’s flu season hitting harder and earlier than ever, Stillwater Medical Group and Lakeview Hospital have some tips to help you protect yourself and others from the virus. “The easiest but most important thing for people to remember during flu season is that if you have flu-like symptoms you should stay home,” says Andrew Dorwart, MD, St. Croix Valley Medical Director, President of Stillwater Medical Group, Chief Medical Officer Lakeview Health. “By leaving your home to go to work, school or even your doctor’s office, you run the risk of spreading the illness to others.”

According to Dr. Dorwart a person suffering from the flu is highly contagious from the day before symptoms appear up until seven days after symptoms begin. This is why it is increasingly important to get vaccinated. Continue Reading →

Lakeview Hospital Prepared for Ebola: Training, Education are Keys to Emergency Preparedness

From Stillwater Medical Group:

In response to the ongoing coverage of the Ebola virus over the past several weeks, officials at Stillwater Medical Group and Lakeview Hospital are taking proactive steps to prepare staff members in the event they should encounter an Ebola patient. “At Stillwater Medical Group, Lakeview Hospital and all of HealthPartners, we take Ebola very seriously and are committed to the safety of our employees and patients,” said Andrew Dorwart, MD. “We will continue to monitor new guidelines and recommendations as they are released from the Centers for Disease Control and the Minnesota Department of Health. Our policies and procedures will be updated as new information is released.”

While there has not been a reported case of Ebola in Minnesota or Wisconsin, the hospital and clinics have posted signage at all entry points requesting that patients notify staff of their recent travel history, and are screening patients in order to identify symptoms of Ebola. In the event that a patient has traveled to an infected area and is demonstrating these symptoms, the hospital and clinics have created a standard protocol to place the patient in a designated isolation room away from general staff and other patients, while preparing to transport the individual to a designated Ebola care hospital in the Twin Cities.
