Lift Bridge Brewing Co’s Irish Coffee Stout Release Party is Saturday

Lift Bridge Brewing Company’s annual Irish Coffee Stout release party is happening this weekend. The Irish Coffee Stout release party is from noon to 10 p.m. Saturday, March 7. The event is 21+ after 7 p.m.

Lift Bridge’s Irish Coffee Stout blends the flavors of whiskey, cream and coffee into the brew. The seasonal beer will be available in bottles starting March 7. “Russian Imperial Stout is aged in whiskey barrels and blended with a big Milk Stout, before it’s finished off with local free trade organic roasted coffee,” Lift Bridge Brewing Co’s event description reads. StillwaterEats: Sweet Taste of Italy Opens in Valley Ridge Mall

If you’re looking for a new dining option in Stillwater, Sweet Taste of Italy opened its doors last week. “We quietly opened our doors on Wednesday, Feb. 25 and cannot tell you what an awesome turnout we have had over the last few days and great feedback we’ve received on the food,” Sweet Taste of Italy’s Facebook status read on Sunday. “We even got to start our very first waitlist on Saturday night (wish we would have taken pictures yesterday, it was great to see and hear so many people enjoying dinner)!” The home-style Italian restaurant is in the former Fresh Fields space — and offers pasta, pizza, sandwiches, salads and more for dine-in or take-out. StillwaterEats!: Lion’s Main Plans Spring Opening in the Grand Garage

A new restaurant and lounge will open this spring in the Grand Garage in downtown Stillwater. Dave and Kris Najarian — owners of Nelson’s Ice Cream — are opening Lion’s Main, a restaurant and lounge, in the space formerly occupied by Reve 324 (Reve Bistro and Bar relocated to the Chestnut Building). “Lion’s Main will offer well-executed casual cuisine, local brews and specialize in classic cocktails with an artisan twist,” a new release announcing plans for Lion’s Main reads. “Not only will the quality of Lion’s Main handcrafted drinks and elegantly simplistic food offerings distinguish them, but the comfortable and upbeat atmosphere offered to their guests is what will really set the restaurant and lounge apart.”

Not Justa Bar Opens in Bayport

Steven and Barbara Meyer’s expansion of Not Justa Cafe — Not Justa Bar — opens at 4 p.m. Monday in Bayport. The Meyers purchased the Perro Creek Tavern, which was located next door to Not Justa Cafe, last month. The space was renovated, and the menu will feature items that are not available at the café such as flatbread pizzas and pastas, along with cocktails. “We’ve needed to expand in Bayport for a long time,” Steven Meyer told the Stillwater Gazette last month. “There’s always a wait at the door Saturday and Sunday mornings and because we have just eight booths that (seat) four people and the counter, we can never serve larger groups. Lift Bridge Brewing Releases Silhouette Russian Imperial Stout Today

Lift Bridge Brewing Co. is hosting a release party today for their highly anticipated Silhouette Russian Imperial Stout. Silhouette Russian Imperial Stout was recently named the highest rated beer in Minnesota by coolmaterial.com, who used data from BeerAdvocate for the rating. Chef Shawn Smalley Break Down Jerk Chicken With a Sword on Twin Cities Live

Chef Shawn Smalley has brought plenty of national exposure to Stillwater’s food scene — and on Tuesday afternoon, our resident pirate broke out the sword on Twin Cities Live. Smalley’s Caribbean Barbeque and Pirate Bar was featured last week on The Food Network’s show “Best. Ever.“

When the Food Network sent their staff out looking for the BBQ, they came to Stillwater where they featured the “Best Reggae-Worthy Chicken, Ever.” After being featured on The Food Network, Twin Cities Live asked Smalley to give their viewers a few tips on cooking jerk chicken.

Sweet Taste of Italy Hopes to Open Stillwater Location Soon

Sweet Taste of Italy is hoping to open later this month or in early-February in the Valley Ridge Mall. The home-style Italian restaurant will open in the former Fresh Fields space offering pasta, pizza, sandwiches, salads and more for dine-in or take-out. We make and bake fresh from scratch each day our very own sweet Italian bread, in fact that’s where our name came from and what we’re famous for,” the restaurant’s website reads. “We take pride in our homemade items and do not use preservatives in any of them, just fresh honest ingredients and a little bit of love.”

When the restaurant opens, store hours will be 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Thai Basil to Open in Stillwater Later This Month

A Thai food restaurant is coming to Stillwater. Thai Basil will open later this month in the former Aristos building on the North Frontage Road. The sale of Aristos was finalized last week. Samy Youssef told the Stillwater Gazette that owning two restaurants became “too much,” and that he wants “to spend some time with my kids before they graduate.”

Youseff also owns The Main Cafe in downtown Stillwater. Last month, the Stillwater City Council approved a full liquor license request by John and Phouvanh Soderquist for Thai Basil. Continue Reading →

Lift Bridge’s Hop Dish IPA Picked as One of Minnesota’s Best Brews

Lift Bridge Brewing Co.’s Hop Dish IPA has been named one of Minnesota’s six best brews on the shelf by a panel of “beer geeks” assembled by Vita.mn. “Every year (since last year), Vita.mn gathers a bunch of beer smarties to honor Minnesota brews that stand out among their peers,” Vita.mn’s announcement reads.  “In 2013, we inaugurated a ’Sota Suds Hall of Fame of iconic and game-changing beers: Summit EPA, Grain Belt Premium, Schell’s Pils, Bent Paddle Black Ale, Steel Toe Size 7 and Surly Furious.” This year, Vita.mn’s panel of judges selected a “best on the shelf” six pack. Maple Island Brewing Company Opens Tuesday in Downtown Stillwater

Maple Island Brewing Company is opening Tuesday in downtown Stillwater. The new microbrewery and taproom located in the Maple Island Hardware Building has outdoor seating will open featuring six brews. Here’s the opening tap list:

Maple Island Brewing Launches KickStarter Campaign to Fund Downtown Microbrewery and Taproom

 

Frank Fabio and Nick Brau recently launched a KickStarter campaign to help fund the startup costs of Maple Island Brewing in downtown Stillwater. Fabio and Brau launched the campaign this month with a goal of raising $30,000 by Sunday, July 6. As of publication, 12 backers have donated $996 to make Maple Island Brewing a reality. “The main work on the building has already begun, but we need your help with the finishing touches,” the KickStarter campaign reads. “Your funds will help us with electrical and plumbing needs, plumbing fixtures, lighting, art work, decor, finishing the bar, tables, chairs, pint glasses, and growlers.”

Mama Luna Apothecary Plans Coffee Shop Expansion in Staples Mill

 

Kiva Sherr-Nelson and her husband Jesse Nelson hope to add a new coffee counter and 12 seats to their Mama Luna Apothecary business located in the former Supreme Bean space in Staples Mill. Sherr-Nelson is looking for a special use permit to operate a 300 square foot coffee shop with an existing outdoor eating area. Mama Luna Apothecary recently launched and successfully completed a kickstarter campaign to help fund a new cafe expansion. More than 40 backers supported the effort with $7,598. Revé 324 Plans on Expanding with a Move to Chestnut Street

 

After five years on Main Street, Revé 324 is looking to expand by moving from the Grand Garage to the former US Bank building at the corner of Chestnut and Second streets in downtown Stillwater. The plan is to renovate part of the first floor of 200 Chestnut Street into Revé 324’s new restaurant space—and eventually create a 1,700 square foot outdoor dining space. The new space will allow Revé 324’s owners Matt and Nate Stabenow more seating inside and out. The Stillwater Planning Commission on Monday night unanimously approved the proposal. The building is currently home to the Greater Stillwater Chamber of Commerce, Nutrition Revolution, and Monde Salon and Spa among others. Continue Reading →

Oasis Cafe Successfully Defends ‘Best Burger in the Valley’ Title

 

The Oasis Cafe successfully defended their title in the annual “Best Burger in the Valley” contest to raise money to fight cystic fibrosis. Since 2010, the contest has raised more than $57,000 for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Participating restaurants include: Brine’s Restaurant & Bar, Leo’s Grill & Malt Shop, Pub 112, Rafters food & spirits, Smalley’s Caribbean Barbeque, Water Street Inn and The Oasis Cafe. LOLO American Kitchen and Craft Bar Grand Opening is Wednesday

 

Joe Ehlenz and Brad Nordeen are about to bring a new kind of dining experience to downtown Stillwater. 

LOLO (Locally Owned, Locally Operated) American Kitchen and Craft Bar is opened this weekend in the new Peasley Building at 233 Main St. S.

Lolo had an “impromptu opening” with craft cocktails on Friday night, and began serving small plates Saturday.

Food Truck Owner Proposes ‘Wok on Water’ Chinese Restaurant on North Main Street

 

The owner of Stillwater’s Wok on Wheels food truck is hoping to open a storefront restaurant called Wok on Water at 126 N. Main St. Shiqin Chen’s proposal will go before the Planning Commission on Monday, April 14. Chen has operated his food truck Wok on Wheels in the parking lot of Let There Be Light since 2010. The restaurant would replace the food truck. Opening a storefront restaurant, Chen says, will give him the opportunity to be open all year. Continue Reading →

Nelson’s Ice Cream Set to Open Today

 

Get ready for ice cream, Stillwater. Nelson’s Ice Cream announced that it is plans to open for the season on Sunday, April  6 at noon. Nelson’s has been in business since 1923. Stillwater’s historical gem offers 46 ice cream flavors served in mammoth portions. Nelson’s spring hours are Monday-Friday from 3-9 p.m., Saturdays from 11 a.m. – 10 p.m., and Sundays noon to 9 p.m.

Three Rivers Wine Trail and Stillwater CVB Present Spring Into Wine Event

 

The Three Rivers Wine Trail and the Stillwater Visitors Bureau are putting on a weekend of wine sampling paired with desserts in the St. Croix, Mississippi and Cannon river valleys. “Spring into Wine” is a self-drive event to entice wine enthusiasts to get out and explore five local wineries while sampling wine and dessert in the river valley. Ticket cost is $20 in advance, $25 on the day of the event and includes a sample of six wines and two desserts at each of the five wineries on the trail. ‘Best Burger in the Valley’ Tour: Pub 112’s Stuffed Molly Malone Burger

 

For the past five years a group of downtown Stillwater restaurants has put on the “Best Burger in the Valley” contest benefiting the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. To date, the contest has raised more than $50,000. In support of the cause, I’m on a burger tour of each of the seven restaurants in the contest–and without inserting my opinion– to tell you what you can look forward to in the coming weeks if you have a Best Burger card. Stuffed Molly Malone

Pub 112 is offering up their Stuffed Molly Malone creation for the “Best Burger” competition. This Irish twist on a Minnesota own Juicy Lucy features a half-pound certified Angus burger is stuffed with local cheddar cheese, garlic and herbs, and topped with crispy rashers and 2 Gingers Whiskey BBQ sauce and served on a wild rice bun. Leo’s offers up several burgers on their menu for the “Best Burger” competition. The Texas Burger is a steak-seasoned patty with A-1 and cheddar cheese, topped with an onion ring and served on Texas Toast. You can also choose from Leo’s new bacon, egg and cheeseburger, and old standby’s like Mucho Leo’s, the Black’nd Blue, Mushroom and Swiss, Patty Melt, Leo’s Melt, Gardenbuger, Chili Cheeseburger and Bacon Cheddar Burger. QuickFire Pizza’s Next ‘Make a Difference Monday’ Events to Benefit Camp Odayin, The Locals

 

Have you heard of QuickFire Pizza’s newest promotion, “Make a Difference Monday”? If not, here’s the deal: Each Monday, QuickFire Pizza will choose one charity, organization, sports team, school group etc. to partner with for the day. Smalley’s Caribbean Barbeque to Host Beer Dinner Featuring Hammerheart Brews on Tuesday

 

Smalley’s Caribbean Barbeque is teaming up with Hammerheart Brewing Company to host the downtown restaurant’s very first beer dinner. Chef Aaron Cave has put together five courses (with an Amuse Bouche) that will bring out the bold flavors Hammerheart’s brews. Smalley’s worked with Chris Kohtz, the owner of Wedge & Wheel to create a cheese plate for the Amuse Bouche. The dinner is $55 per person. It starts at 7:30 p.m.

Brine’s offers up all of the burgers on their menu for the “Best Burger” competition. The Brine Burger is made with Brine’s own fresh ground beef burger topped with Canadian Bacon, Swiss Cheese, sauteed onions and mushrooms. You can also choose from their Mushroom Burger, Bacon Cheeseburger, California Burger or the traditional cheeseburger.
