Kids Oasis, an Indoor Playground, May Be Coming to Downtown Stillwater

An indoor kids playground is coming to downtown Stillwater. The Stillwater Planning Commission on Wednesday approved a proposal by John and Kelly Daly to create Kids Oasis, an indoor playground and small events center, in the space at 120 South Main Street next door to their toy store Gammy and Gumpy’s. The idea is to have walk-in and open playtime during the weekday and Saturday mornings and rental space during the afternoons and on Sundays. “We need something like this in Stillwater,” John Daly said. “There’s no reason parents and families should have to leave Stillwater during the winter to have their kid’s party in Woodbury, Hudson or Oakdale.”

The idea is to build various town-themed building facades inside the Main Street space that house creative exploration, John said. Continue Reading →

USA TODAY Highlights Stillwater as One of Yelp’s ‘Hidden Gems’

Several Stillwater businesses were featured Thursday in a USA TODAY post of Yelp’s Hidden Gems.

Yelp recently ran a “unique query of millions of user-generated records” looking for American destinations that travelers may not be familiar with, but had independent businesses with stellar rankings from readers that would appeal to tourists. With that information, USA TODAY asked Yelp to name the “highest-rated non-chain, local businesses in each category (food, nightlife, shopping, etc.),” that would give visitors day trip guide. Here’s a look at USA TODAY’s post. Stillwater was the first in a USA TODAY series of “hidden gems” in states across the nation. Here are the businesses featured in USA TODAY’s photo gallery of spots to hit on a day trip to our beloved river town:

A Co-Workspace is the Newest Creative Idea for the Connolly Shoe Factory

There are a lot of creative ideas being worked out for the redevelopment of the old Connolly Shoe Factory building in downtown Stillwater. Judd Sather and two silent partners have set out on a $5 million project that will turn the old shoe factory, located at 123 N. Second St., into a space to accommodate large events, a new brewery and taproom, a speakeasy, and possibly, a community workspace for freelancers and entrepreneurs who work from home. Tommy Tompkins launched the Lift Bridge Workspace’s website last week to gauge interest for the idea of co-workspace in downtown Stillwater. “We’re on a mission to provide an inspiring co-workspace option for freelancers, graphic designers, web developers, startups, and other professionals that work from home on the east side of the Twin Cities,” Tompkins said. “Ultimately, we’d love to be the catalyst that brings freelancers and entrepreneurs together in downtown Stillwater so that they can rub elbows, learn from each other, and help each other succeed in their own ventures.”

If the business comes to fruition, Lift Bridge Workspace will provide open and private workspaces, conference rooms and event space for rent in the north end of downtown Stillwater, Tompkins said. Continue Reading →
