Photos: Stillwater Memorial Day Ceremony

Monday marked the 10th anniversary of Stillwater’s Memorial Day Ceremony being held at Veterans Memorial Park. The ceremony concluded with a flyover by three vintage AT-6 Warbird World War II aircraft. World War II veterans Bob Clemens and Vince Parker were this year’s featured speakers. Clemens, a native of White Bear Lake, enlisted in the Army Air Force in 1942 at the age of 18. He flew 50 bombing missions over Europe as an aerial navigator on a B-17 Flying Fortress. Photos: Stillwater at the State Hockey Tournament

It’s not very often that an entire high school hockey game is played without a single penalty assessed, but that happened Friday afternoon when the Stillwater Ponies took on Duluth East. Duluth East junior Brian Bunten scored both of the Greyhounds goals –one in the second period, and the game-winner 3 minutes and 7 seconds into overtime. Stillwater’s goal came in the first period by junior Tyler Benson. Sophomore goalie Josh Benson had 36 saves in the game. The Ponies, making their first state tournament appearance, finished the season with a 16-12-2 record. Continue Reading →

Snow Day: Winter Photos of Stillwater, Lake Elmo and Beyond …

This week’s snow storm wreaked havoc on commuters, added a few extra hours of physical labor for many homeowners and closed Stillwater Area Public Schools. But let’s be honest, it also brought a heavy dose of winter beauty to Stillwater, even if you’re tired of winter. Here’s a few photos of the valley after Thursday’s snow storm. PHOTOS: A Perfect Time for Stillwater’s Ice Cream Social … Mid-January


Back in 1950 Stillwater businessman Gib Larson of Snowland Foods as well as other business people held the first winter ice cream social at the St. Croix Boom Site. Even though the temperatures were well below zero more than a thousand people came out and enjoyed the ice cream and the season. The event was moved to Lowell Park the next year and later it moved to Lily Lake. The event was sponsored at that time by the Jaycees and eventually faded away like winter into springtime.
