40-Foot Tall Community Christmas Tree Arrives in Downtown Stillwater

On the first snowy day of the season, Stillwater’s community Christmas tree was cut down and delivered to Lowell Park. The 40-foot tall Christmas tree was harvested at the Silver Creek Tree Farm by Jeff Hause of J.G. Hause Construction Inc., (click on the link to watch video) and delivered to downtown Stillwater by Mike Raleigh, of Raleigh Trucking. The tree will be decorated by a group of volunteers on Wednesday morning, with the community Christmas tree lighting happening Saturday, Dec. 5, at the end of the Twinkle Parade. Photos: Stillwater Log Jam Down Hill Derby Crashes

The second annual Stillwater Log Jam Down Hill Derby is in the books. Craig Casperson’s Rubble Racer beat out the Harbor Bar Racer driven by Stacie Brown by a matter of inches to take home the crown. Dan Schwarz of Stillwater Lift Bridge Brewing Co. finished third with the Stillwater Elks car driven by Scottie Radke coming in fourth. Here’s a look at a few of the crashes that happened on the Second Street hill on Friday afternoon:

Very few of us will have the opportunity to take in a bird’s eye view of a project that will play a huge role in shaping the future of the St. Croix River Valley. Photos: 30-Foot Tall Christmas Tree Arrives in Stillwater

 

A 30-foot tall Christmas tree is standing in north Lowell Park thanks to a collaboration of valley residents who have wanted to see the idea of a community Christmas tree in downtown Stillwater come true. Jeff Hause, of J.G. Hause Construction Inc., bought the balsam fir from Tom and Dianne Polasik, who own Silver Creek Tree Farm. Mike Raleigh, of Raleigh Trucking volunteered time and resources to deliver and install it. Stillwater city staff drilled the hole. The tree stand was welded together by Richard Thron of Mantyla Well Drilling Inc. in Lakeland. Continue Reading →

Photos: Boulders Fall from Bluff North of Downtown Stillwater

About five boulders fell from the bluff just north of The Stillwater Depot onto Highway 95 early Friday morning. The boulders fell from the bluff at about 1 a.m. Friday. They have since been moved to the shoulder of the roadway. Here’s a few photos:

Boys Hockey: Stillwater Tops Orono 2-1 (Photos)

Coming off of the first trip to the Minnesota State Hockey Tournament in school history, the Stillwater boys hockey team won their season opener 2-1 over Orono. Stillwater goaltender Josh Benson had 21 saves. Devon Cates scored the Ponies first goal with assists from Jackson Cates and Jack Mapstone. Simon Sagissor scored the Ponies second goal with assists from Luke Manning and Jack Manning. The Ponies had 36 shots on goal. Continue Reading →

Photos: Veterans Day in Stillwater

Leo’s Grill & Malt Shop is honoring veterans and active-duty service personnel with a free meal onVeterans Day, Nov. 11. This is the seventh year that Leo’s has held the Veterans Day event. At 11 a.m. local veterans proceeded from the Stillwater American Legion Post 48 through downtown Stillwater, and ended at the corner of Main and Chestnut streets near Leo’s. Stillwater police stopped traffic while the Color Guard performed their traditional ceremony including a bugler performing “Taps,” a short prayer and a 21-gun salute. Continue Reading →

Photos: Totino-Grace Tops Stillwater in Football Section Finals

No. 2 seeded Totino-Grace (9-1) will return to the state tournament after beating Stillwater 29-13 in the crossover matchup in 6A playoff action. Stillwater running back Zach Knox did set a new Ponies rushing record in the battle rushing for 75 yards on 16 carries. Overall, the Ponies were held to 168 total yards. Football: Stillwater Plays Mounds View Wednesday for Share of SEC Title (Photos)

Stillwater will play Mounds View for a share of the SEC title Wednesday night at Pony Stadium. The Ponies (6-1) bounced back after their only loss of the season, and pounded Woodbury 47-20 Friday night at Royal Stadium. Stillwater running back Marques Williams ran for 85 yards and 3 touchdowns filling in for the injured Zach Knox. Quarterback DJ Skie threw for 4 touchdowns against the Royals (1-6) — three of them to wide receiver Brooks Carroll and one to tight end Matt Anderson. The Ponies blocked a  punt, recovered an onside kick and defensive back Johnny Randazzo had two interceptions. Continue Reading →

Photos: Cretin-Derham Hall Hands Stillwater First Loss of Season

Cretin-Derham Hall handed the Ponies their first loss of the season on a windy, wet and cold Friday night at Pony Stadium. The Raiders came into Pony Stadium on Homecoming night with a chip on their shoulder–after losing to Stillwater last year during Cretin-Derham Hall’s Homecoming–and beat the Ponies 32-14. Cretin-Derham Hall (4-2) got off to a 19-0 first quarter lead and never looked back. Senior Brooks Carroll scored both touchdowns for the Ponies. Raiders running back D’mitri Walker ran for more than 170 yards and two touchdowns against the Ponies defense. Continue Reading →

Photos: Ponies Spoil White Bear Lake’s Homecoming, Improve to 5-0

The Ponies spoiled White Bear Lake’s Homecoming last week with a 35-7 win in the state’s oldest rivalry. Stillwater improved to 5-0 on the season, and moved up to No. 6 in the AP’s football rankings. The Ponies are keeping pace with Mounds View (5-0) and East Ridge (5-0) at the top of the Suburban East Conference.

Stillwater Log Jam kicked off Thursday night with the 14th annual “Ice Cream Social and Amateur Talent Show” at the Washington County Historic Courthouse. There was a petting zoo, food, 25-cent root beer floats, penny candy, beverages and more. The first clue for the Medallion Hunt was also read. The event was sponsored by the Washington County Historic Courthouse in partnership with Leo’s Grill and Malt Shop, Edina Realty, the Stillwater Noon Rotary and First Choice DJ Service. Photos: Strong Winds and Rain Down Trees, Power Lines in Stillwater

 

Stillwater police and firefighters were called to numerous storm-related calls Saturday, including reports of fallen trees and downed power lines. The National Weather Service is forecasting heavy rain throughout the week with the possibility of severe weather and flooding on Monday through Wednesday. The Stillwater Fire Department is reminding residents to assume that all downed power lines are energized and report them immediately. Here are a few submitted photos from Saturday’s storm:
