Stillwater Community Shapes Thrift Store Sonata’s New Album, ‘Old Wood & Kerosene’

If you get out and about in Stillwater, there’s a good chance you’ve seen Thrift Store Sonata at Summer Tuesdays, Log Jam, Lift Bridge Brewery and other music venues around town. This weekend, Thrift Store Sonata will release the band’s first album, “Old Wood and Kerosene” at Lift Bridge Brewery, playing with their friends The Cactus Blossoms (duo) and The Roe Family Singers. Tickets are $5, and available online here. The album is $10. ArtReach St. Croix Announces Full List of Events for ‘The Big Read in the St. Croix Valley’

ArtReach St. Croix has a bunch of events happening this spring as part of “The Big Read in the St. Croix Valley.” Events and book discussions centered around themes found in “Love Medicine” by Minnesota author Louise Erdrich will take place in April and May at venues across the valley. Hounds of Finn ‘Park the Bus’ at the Water Street Inn St. Patrick’s Day Weekend

Captain Crash Bash 4 is March 1 at Water Street Inn

The annual Captain Crash Bash fundraiser is happening Sunday, March 1 at the Water Street Inn. The fourth annual Lakeview Hospice Fundraiser features 13 bands for $15 with a silent auction, raffle and food and drink specials. Music starts at 1 p.m.

ArtReach St. Croix’s pop-up gallery in downtown Stillwater will remain open until Sunday, Dec. 28. If you’re looking to add a little creativity to your holiday shopping this year, check out ArtReach St. Croix’s Holiday Pop-Up Shop that features original artwork by more than 45 local artists including jewelry, pottery, photography and more. The shop provides artists who do not normally sell through retail galleries with the opportunity to reach shoppers during the holiday shopping season. This year’s pop-up shop was made possible by building owner Mike Lynsky’s donation. ArtReach St. Croix’s Pop-Up Gallery Will Open On Black Friday in Downtown Stillwater

ArtReach St. Croix’s pop-up holiday gift gallery will open at 10 a.m. Friday in downtown Stillwater. The pop-up gallery will open for five weeks, featuring paintings, pottery, post cards, glass, sculptures, textiles and jewelry created by more than 35 local artists, ArtReach St. Croix’s Executive Director Heather Rutledge said. Not Done Loving – A Documentary Film Screened By The Marine Film Society

ST. CROIX BALLET: The 24th Annual Stillwater Nutcracker

St. Croix Ballet’s annual Nutcracker, directed by Susan Hovey, will be held at Stillwater Area High School on Thanksgiving weekend November 28th, 29th and 30th. Ms. Hovey, who took over as director of St. Croix Ballet last year after the retirement of founder Karla Sweeney, who stepped down due to a gallant 15-year battle with late stage breast cancer, said that a unique signature of St. Croix Ballet’s beloved seasonal classic is the half dozen young men that have grown up at the studio and now are highly talented dancers. The Stillwater Visitors Bureau is hosting a photography contest. The Stillwater CVB invites photographers or people with a love for capturing great shots to submit their best Stillwater images by Sept. 14 for the chance to win up to $300 or a Stillwater Getaway. Stillwater Community Theatre’s Presentation of ‘Peter Pan’ Opens Thursday

Stillwater Community Theatre’s presentation of “Peter Pan” opens tonight at Stillwater Area High School. More than 100 cast members will join Peter Pan, Wendy, Michael and John in the high-flying Broadway musical July 10-13. “It’s amazing how so many different aged performers can come together in ‘Peter Pan,’ Director Haeri Tollefson said. “The kids are cute, the tunes are catchy, the cast sounds great and everyone is talented. Sign Up for St. Croix Battle of the Bands Contest in Lake Elmo

The St. Croix Battle of the Bands is back and will take place during the 38th annual Huff’n Puff softball tournament in Lake Elmo. The city of Lake Elmo is looking for 6 to 8 bands to compete by playing a 15-minute, 3-song set of covers or originals tunes. The bands will be judged on overall performance, technique, stage presence and crowd interaction and appearance/image. ArtReach Receives 15K Grant for The Big Read in the St. Croix Valley

ArtReach St. Croix was one of 77 organizations nationwide to recently receive a $15,000 grant to host to host The Big Read in the St. Croix Valley. The Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts, designed to revitalize the role of reading in American culture by exposing citizens to great works of literature and encouraging them to read for pleasure. Shhhh…. City Council Says ArtReach Can Have Outdoor Music, So Long As It’s Not Amplified

 

If musicians play outdoors during ArtReach St. Croix’s Front Porch Series this year, they will have to unplug—literally. The Stillwater City Council on Tuesday approved a special use permit allowing outdoor events at ArtReach Alliance, but with a particularly unique twist: outdoor music cannot be amplified. Stillwater Community Theater Casting for Summer Production of ‘Peter Pan’

 

Stillwater Community Theatre will be casting community members for the summer theater production of “Peter Pan.”

Directors are looking to cast third-graders to adult in roles including the Darling family, Peter Pan, Captain Hook and many more favorites.  Peter Pan is a musical based on the play by Sir. J.M. Barrie. Auditions are open to the public and will be held April 14 – 16 from 4-9 p.m. in the auditorium at Stillwater Area High School. Interested individuals can sign up for audition times by emailing Haeri Tollefson, Director, at tollefsonha@stillwaterschools.org. The email should list the day and suggested time range you are available. Brooklyn Rider to Play with Béla Fleck at the Minnesota Zoo this Summer

 

We first got a taste of Béla Fleck playing with Brooklyn Rider two years ago with a couple of intimate shows at the Washington County Historical Courthouse during the Stillwater Music Festival. This summer, Brooklyn Rider and Béla Fleck are taking the stage at the Weesner Family Amphitheater at the Minnesota Zoo on July 3. Tickets are $42. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Brooklyn Rider, they have been putting on the Stillwater Music Festival since 2006 as a way to unveil new material and collaborations. The Stillwater Music Festival generally has shows at the Stillwater Public Library, a small show at the Daily Grind, the Washington County Courthouse in Stillwater and the Cedar Cultural Center in Minneapolis. Four Orchestras from Stillwater and Oak-Land Junior High Schools to Perform at Orchestra Hall

 

Four orchestras from Oak-Land and Stillwater junior high schools have been invited to play at Orchestra Hall next week. The Camerata and Novella orchestras from Stillwater Junior High under the direction of Kent Musser and the Spiritoso and Scherzando orchestras from Oak-Land Junior High under the direction of Julie Vanderstappen from Oak-Land Junior High each received “Superior with Distinction” ratings during the Minnesota String and Orchestra Teachers Association Middle Level Orchestra Festival. All four orchestras have been invited to perform at Orchestra Hall on March 31. The concert begins at 6:30 p.m.

This is the 10th consecutive year Stillwater Area School District’s orchestra program has been recognized with this honor. In all, 9 grades junior high school orchestras from around the state received ‘Superior with Distinction’ ratings. Continue Reading →

‘Clouds’ Over SXSW: A Firm Handshake to Play Cause Rocker Party in Austin, Texas

 

A Firm Handshake has some exciting things happening this spring. This Friday, Zach Sobiech’s bandmates Sammy Brown and Reed Redmond will play the Cause Rockers Party at SXSW Music and Film Festival in Austin, Texas—sharing the stage with the likes of fellow Minnesotans Actual Wolf, War Poets and Nicholas David and The Feeling. If you’re going down to SXSW this weekend, A Firm Handshake plays from 3:30 – 4 p.m. Friday, March 14 at Liberty Bar East. Before Brown and Redmond take the stage, there will be a panel discussion on cause-driven music releases with Children’s Cancer Research Fund with Laura Sobiech others behind Zach’s song, “Clouds.”

Captain Crash Bash 3 is happening Sunday at Mallards on the St. Croix. The third annual Lakeview Hospice Fundraiser features 10 bands for $10 with a silent auction, food and Captain Morgan drink specials all day. Music starts at 1 p.m.
