Warner Bros. Acquires Movie Rights to Develop Zach Sobiech ‘Fly a Little Higher’ Movie

Warner Bros. has acquired the movie rights to Laura Sobiech’s book about her son, Zach Sobiech,” titled “Fly a Little Higher, according to Justin Baldoni, who directed the SoulPancake documentary about Zach, titled “My Last Day: Meet Zach Sobiech” will direct and produce the film, according to  The film will be titled “Clouds” after Zach’s hit farewell song, which now has more than 12 million Youtube views. Partners in Praise Girls Choir to Give Concert

The Partners in Praise Girls Choir will present a concert at First Presbyterian Church, 6201 Osgood Avenue, Stillwater, at 4:00 on Sunday afternoon, February 14th. Directed by Julia Fahey and made up of auditioned senior and junior high girls from across the Twin Cities area, this talented group of young women has toured widely in Europe, Latin America, and Australia, as well as in this country. Now in its 22nd season, the Choir will perform later this month at the American Choral Directors Association North Central Division convention, and in July will depart on a concert tour in Spain. Local Dancer To Perform in Professional Production of Nutcracker Ballet

This coming December Stillwater resident Emma Atkins will be dancing in Twin Cities Ballet of Minnesota’s newly enhanced professional ballet production, “A Minnesota Nutcracker.”

Emma is currently a student at Ballet Royale Minnesota, Twin Cities Ballet official school and one of the foremost ballet academies in Minnesota. Emma will be performing in various dances within the production alongside professional company dance members. Twin Cities Ballet’s original full-length professional production of The Nutcracker ballet is one of the most attended holiday events in the Twin Cities. This year’s fresh rendition retains all the magic and traditions of TCB’s beloved classic, but will now feature all new custom designed and painted Minnesota centric backdrops, offering a unique Nutcracker experience for Twin Cities audiences. “A Minnesota Nutcracker” performances run December 11 -13 at Ames Center in Burnsville, MN. The Big Carve Set for Oct. 21 at Lift Bridge Brewery

The Big Carve is happening this week at Lift Bridge Brewing Co. Carve pumpkins without having to clean up the mess from 5-9 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 21 in the brewery. For $6, Lift Bridge gives out carving tools and a pumpkin from Bergmann’s Greenhouse. There will also be food by R.A. MacSammy’s Food Truck, family-friendly music with the Roe Family Singers. Stillwater’s Fall Colors Fine Art and Music Festival this Weekend in Lowell Park

The Fall Colors Fine Art and Music Festival is happening this weekend at Lowell Park in downtown Stillwater. The Greater Stillwater Chamber of Commerce’s 31st annual event will feature 60 artists, art demonstrations and music all weekend. This year, three artists will be doing pottery and jewelry demonstrations throughout the weekend. And something new to the festival: ArtAndes, which is owned by Melanie Ebertz, of Stillwater, is bringing weavers from Peru who make textiles and will be in colorful Peruvian dress. Check Out Discover Stillwater’s 2015 Photo Contest Winners

Discover Stillwater has announced the winners for its 2015 Summer Photo Contest. Overall, 312 photos were entered into the contest. Carol Seefedlt won first place with a shot of the Andiamo below an orange sky. Dave Parker took second place, Troy Schmidt took third place and Sara Jespersen won the 2015 Popular Vote Photo Contest. Honorable Mentions were given to photos by Judd Sather, Troy Schmidt, Tom Wieland, and Kelley Brenner. Brooklyn Rider’s Last Stillwater Music Festival Set for Aug. 25-27

Brooklyn Rider’s 10th Stillwater Music Festival will be their last. The Stillwater Music Festival will happen Aug. 25-27. Over the last decade, Stillwater has been a place where Brooklyn Rider has rolled out new musical ventures including collaborations with Béla Fleck, Persian kemancheh virtuoso Kayhan Kalhor, Irish fiddler Martin Hayes and singer-songwriter Aoife O’Donovan. “With a heavy heart that we announce that this summer’s festival will be our last festival,” Brooklyn Rider members wrote on the Stillwater Music Festival website. History Comes to Life as a New Mural at Candyland in Downtown Stillwater

If you’ve been on the north end of Main Street this week, you may have noticed a new mural on the Candyland building in downtown Stillwater. The mural — based off of a photograph taken of the nearly complete Lift Bridge in 1931 — was painted by local artist Randy Raduenz. “Randy did an amazing job, as always,” Brandon Lamb, owner of Candyland said. “It looks great.” When the Lambs first bought the building on North Main Street, they always saw the north block wall as an eye sore, Brandon said. The Valley Chamber Chorale will hold open auditions for experienced choral singers in all voice parts during August. The Chorale is a mixed voice ensemble that enjoys a professional standard and an enviable reputation as an arts organization in the greater Twin Cities area. Made up of 45 adults, drawn from many walks of life, and from throughout the St. Croix Valley and the Twin Cities, the Chorale performs music from the entire range of choral literature: from Renaissance to contemporary, a cappella to works with full professional orchestra. It’s night two of Stillwater Log Jam. Music starts Saturday afternoon, and includes Moors and McCumber,Barley Jacks, Ruben, Charlie Parr and Frankie Lee.  Black Market Brass and the “Stompin’ Blues” group The 4onthefloor Saturday night in Lowell Park. “Music is a big part of Stillwater Log Jam, and it’s probably one of the biggest change areas from Lumberjack Days,” Local Board Member Paul Creager said. “Our focus is doing music programming that enhances and gives opportunities to local musicians, while bringing in some of the best acts from across the region.”

Stillwater Log Jam: Friday Night Music Schedule (Videos)

Stillwater Log Jam is here. The headliners for this year’s festival will be Afro-Cuban dance band Malamanya on Friday night and Afro-beat group Black Market Brass and the “Stompin’ Blues” group The 4onthefloor Saturday night in Lowell Park. Stillwater Log Jam Chef’s Competition is Saturday at Lowell Park

Two local chefs will battle it out during the Stillwater Log Jam Chef’s Competition on Saturday. Reigning champ Chef Aaron Cave of Smalley’s Caribbean Barbeque and Pirate Bar will battle head-to-head with Chef Nate Peterson of Phil’s Tara Hideaway Saturday in front of a live audience at Lowell Park. The chefs will begin the competition at the Stillwater Minnesota Farmers Market at 9 a.m., where they will spend $50 on local produce. The chefs then head downtown to clean the produce, and set up to cook in front of a live audience. The competition will start around 12:30 p.m. The competition will be judged by three James Beard Award winners who will watch, taste and ultimately crown the 2015 Chef’s Competition Champion. St. Croix River Valley Bluegrass Bonanza is April 19

The Stillwater Area Kiwanis Club showcases a bluegrass bonanza on Sunday, April 19, from 1- 6 p.m. at the Heights Hall and Club in Oak Park to benefit organizations and agencies that serve local children in need. The lineup includes includes the Platte Valley Boys, Blue Hazard, Thrift Stone Sonata and Brian Wicklund’s Fiddle Students. Brian Wicklund’s Fiddle Students will set the afternoon in motion with original and standard tunes. These fiddle performers have been lucky to learn and improve their craft at camps from instructors and musicians hand picked by Brian Wicklund, another St. Croix Valley talent known widely inBluegrass communities across the nation.
