Updated from: For the first time ever, the Stillwater boys hockey team is going to the Minnesota State High School Hockey Tournament.

Stillwater stunned top-seeded Hill Murray Friday night with a 2-1 win, sending the Ponies to the big dance.

The Ponies and Pioneers went into the third period tied 1-1.

At 4:14 in the third period, senior forward Brandon Jungman scored a power-play goal that proved to be enough to give Stillwater its first-ever berth in the Minnesota State High School Hockey Tournament.

“We had a great [semifinal] game against White Bear Lake and after that we were just heads-in-the-clouds,” Stillwater defenseman Mitch Reinke told the Star Tribune. “We knew we had a deep group here and we all wanted it. We’re the first team to ever do it and that’s pretty cool.”

The other seven schools in the 2A state tournament include: Lakeville North, Edina, Eagan, Centennial, Eden Prairie, Duluth East and Roseau. The state high school hockey tournament runs March 5 – 8 at the Xcel Energy Center and Mariucci Arena.

Congrats, Ponies.
