The Stillwater Ponies look to upset SEC rival Mounds View Wednesday night in what will be the last chance to be crowned conference champions.
The Ponies (6-1) take on the No. 3 ranked Mustangs (6-1) at 7 p.m. at Ponies Stadium.
If Stillwater wins, the Ponies will earn a share of the Suburban East Conference title. The Ponies have won 22 conference titles.
If Mounds View wins, they will claim their first outright conference championship — and more importantly secure the No. 1 seed in the Class 6A Section 4 playoffs.
Next year, Minnesota prep football will move to a district format — playing eight games against regional programs of similar strength.
The Ponies pounded Woodbury last week 47-20. Mounds View beat East Ridge 21-6.
Here’s how the Star Tribune staff writers are picking Wednesday night’s game:
Jim Paulsen: “Mounds View made a huge statement in beating East Ridge. Stillwater would love to make the same statement on its home field. If Knox can play for the Ponies, he makes the difference. Stillwater 20, Mounds View 14.”
David La Vaque: “The opportunity to clinch an outright conference title and the No. 1 seed in the playoffs will have Mounds View sky-high. Mounds View 21, Stillwater 17.”
