The Greater Stillwater Chamber of Commerce celebrated the opening of The Shire Literary Center on Tuesday, October 13.

The Shire classroom is located within ArtReach St. Croix near downtown Stillwater.

The Shire Literary Center offers creative writing classes for youth including developing skills for the writing of novels, screenwriting, anime, and poetry. Their goals are to nurture the creative spirit, develop youth writing skills, and to connect youth, instructors and resources in the community.

Student-directed and intergenerational in its leadership, The Shire provides a safe place for middle and high school students to challenge themselves, spark their imaginations and learn about the art of storytelling.

“The Stillwater area offers a particularly unique opportunity for our students because it is home to all kinds of imagination feeders: steps and vistas, lively streets, the old prison walls and Indian battleground, historic caves, Victorian houses, the St. Croix river and its iconic lift bridge” says Executive Director, Stephani Atkins.

A Harvest kickoff event takes place on October 25 from 2 to 6:30 p.m.

The event offers a workshop on writing suspenseful stories, a light supper and an open house. The Shire will also be offering writing courses through their “Sampler Series” on weekends in November and December.  Visit www.theshireonline.com for more details.
