ArtReach St. Croix will auction off more than 50 artist-made birdhouses on Sunday, April 24 at Acapulco Restaurante.

For the past three years, ArtReach St. Croix has been sending blank birdhouses out into the community, and each year they come back to the gallery as impressive works of art that showcase the talented artists that live, work and play in the St. Croix Valley.

“Each year, the artists have been raising the bar on the level of artistic quality and creativity,” says Heather Rutledge, executive director at ArtReach St. Croix. “This year we have some amazing pieces that celebrate Leo’s Malt Shop, lake cabins and even the Wizard of Oz. The generosity of the artists to support ArtReach through these birdhouses is remarkable.”

“The idea struck me that the bird house provided, if turned upside down, could be made into a face, squarish in form, with open mouth and flared collar. I even began creating ideas in my computer which have remained virtually untouched untill early 2016. It did not take me long to make a connection between my initial thoughts and the character of the Doorkeeper in the Wizard of Oz. The expressive nature of his facial features fit with the concept so well. The completion of the entire work involved an exploration of many fun and interesting ways to make the birdhouse unique and memorable.” Birdhouse by Nicholas T. Markell.

The birdhouses will be auctioned off at the ArtReach St. Croix Birdhouse Auction from 6-9 p.m., Sunday, April 24 at  Acapulco. If you can’t make it to the auction, contact ArtReach St. Croix about pre-bid opportunities.

“Acapulco is excited to be the venue for this year’s Birdhouse Auction,” says Sam Leon, owner of Acapulco Restaurant. “It is important to us to support our community and help make it as vibrant as possible. The work ArtReach does to support the arts in the area is a great asset to our community.”

“This birdhouse is the work of Terry and Diana Hatchitt, inspired by the cabin we have talked about for years. It represents a home away from home, peaceful & quiet, set in the woods with a stream or lake nearby. The canoe is ready to drop into the water for an afternoon of bliss. There are no motorboats, no lawn mowers, just harmony. ” The Cabin by Terry and Diana Hatchitt,

This year, five birdhouses will be auctioned off in the live auction with guest auctioneers Ted and Rachel Kozlowski. The live auction will begin at 7:45 p.m. The silent auction closes at 8 p.m.

There will also be live music by finger-style guitarist David Harland.

Tickets are $25 for early birds or $30 at the door and are on sale now at ArtReach St. Croix and online. For more information, contact ArtReach at (651) 439-1465.

Proceeds from the birdhouse auction support the arts in the St. Croix Valley through ArtReach St. Croix’s regional arts marketing efforts, including The Big Read in the St. Croix Valley, Take Me to the River and

This year’s community sponsors of the Birdhouse Auction are Acapulco Restaurant, Water Street Inn, Central Bank/MidWestOne Bank and RBC Wealth Management – Rhett Neuman.
