Food Truck Owner Proposes ‘Wok on Water’ Chinese Restaurant on North Main Street

The owner of Stillwater’s Wok on Wheels food truck is hoping to open a storefront restaurant called Wok on Water at 126 N. Main St.

Shiqin Chen’s proposal will go before the Planning Commission on Monday, April 14.

Chen has operated his food truck Wok on Wheels in the parking lot of Let There Be Light since 2010. The restaurant would replace the food truck.

Opening a storefront restaurant, Chen says, will give him the opportunity to be open all year.

A dentist previously occupied the space on North Main Street near Commercial Avenue, but the building has been unoccupied for several years now.

A Chinese restaurant fits in the Main Street area nicely,” Chen wrote in a proposal to the city. “We will offer quick, inexpensive meals to dine-in or take-out, and will bring more people to the north end of downtown.”

City staff recommends that the Planning Commission approve the proposal with conditions that changes to approved plans get reviewed by the community development director, signage issues go before the Heritage Preservation Commission, parking is taken up with the Parking Commission and all finalized plans are approved by fire and building inspectors before issuing a building permit.
