2016 Relay For Life

 

As the Event Lead of the Relay For Life (RFL) of Stillwater I am excited to announce that there will be some changes to our annual community event.

Firstly the most significant change to our event is the location, the 2016 RFL Event will be located at the Stillwater Jr. High School on August 12th and 13th (Fri 6pm – Sat 12pm). We are excited about this opportunity because this location is where our event began over 20 years ago. So to celebrate our homecoming, we have decided to theme this years event as a “Throwback” Event.

We are encouraging teams and participants to choose their favorite decade and dress up in costumes and decorate their campsites. We will be having a group of judges vote on the team that best embodies the Throwback theme, and a Spirit Award Trophy will be given to that team.

Another change that you may notice is that we have changed the date of the event so that we are no longer competing with the washington county fair. We are always trying to make changes so that we are putting on the best event possible for our community to enjoy.

Now the event is a large part of the RFL movement because it brings a community together to support each other and fight cancer while remembering those that have lost their battles. So If you are a Cancer Survivor, or know a Cancer Survivor, please make sure to have them email Sue Smith at ssmith5@good-sam.com with name and their t-shirt size.

At most RFL events we hold a Luminaria Ceremony which takes place after dark, so we can remember people we have lost to cancer, honor people who have fought cancer in the past, and support those whose fight continues. Candles are lit inside of personalized and decorated bags and are placed around the Relay track as glowing tributes to those who’ve been affected by cancer.

These luminary bags come in three different colors. White- To Remember our loved ones that have passed away from cancer. Purple Fade- To Celebrate the lives of people who are survivors in their fight against cancer. (In previous years these bags have been brown, but at night you couldn’t read the name… so we decided to switch to the purple fade design for this years event) Green- To Honor caregivers. Caregivers are unpaid loved ones who give a person with cancer physical and emotional care. They may be spouses, partners, family members, or close friends.

RFL’s are fundraising events raising money for the American Cancer Society with the money that we raise each year we are making progress toward a world without cancer. With your help, we aren’t just fighting one type of cancer we’re fighting for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. Each person who shares the Relay For Life experience can take pride in knowing that they are working to create a world where this disease will no longer threaten our loved ones or rob anyone of another birthday.

The T-Shirt Deadline for registered participants is on Friday, July 15th. Please make sure to have everyone on your team register and fundraise at least $100 by this date in order to be guaranteed your 2016 white Hope Club shirt! To help everyone reach this Hope Club Status, we have set an ambitious goal to help inspire our participants and the community to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

Our event would love to reach $100K donated by July 15th! $100K by July 15th is VERY doable – that’s only $41,371.44! We currently have 207 registered participants – if each person raises $200 we will hit this benchmark.

(We will certainly accept sponsors after this date, but will not be printed on shirts).
